Abstract:
Human-induced biodiversity change may impair ecosystem functions crucial to human well-being. However, the consequences of this change for ecosystem multifunctionality are poorly understood beyond effects of plant species loss, particularly in regions with high biodiversity across trophic levels. Here, we adopt a multitrophic perspective to analyze how biodiversity affects multifunctionality in biodiverse subtropical forests. Data are from the Comparative Study Plots (CSPs) of BEF-China. We consider 22 independent measurements of nine ecosystem functions central to energy and nutrient flow across trophic levels, as well as diversity predictors based on data on woody plants and heterotrophic organisms (soil fungi, macrofaunal decomposers, herbivores, predators, parasitoids).
Design:
Data on 22 ecosystem function measurements, woody plant species richness and composition, and species richness of heterotrophic organisms. See Schuldt et al. "Biodiversity across trophic levels drives multifunctionality in highly diverse forests" for full description of sampling and processing, and for measurement units of individual variables.

Definition:
Number of the Comparative Study Plot; Datagroup description: BEF research plot name; Datagroup description: Reasearch plots of the Biodiversity - Ecosystem functioning experiment (BEF-China). There are three main sites for research plots in the BEF Experiment: Comparative Study Plots (CSP) in the Gutianshan Nature Reserve, having a size of 30x30m^2, measured on the ground. Main Experiment plots have a size of 1 mu, which is about 25x25m^2 in horizontal projection. Pilot Study Plots have a size of 1x1 m^2. Research plots on the main experiment have a "p" in front of their IDs and then a 6 digit code: Plots in the main sites A and B are named according to their position in the original spreadsheet, in which they were designed. They consist of 6 digits: _1st digit_: Site (1:A, 2:B), _digit 2and3_: southwards row: as in spreadsheets the rows are named from the top to the bottom; _digit 4 and 5_: westward column: as in the original spreadsheet, but the letters are converted to numbers (A=01, B=02); _6th digit_: indicator, if the plot has been shifted a quarter mu. Example: "p205260": "p" means that this is a plot that is specified. "2" means, that we are at site B. Now the coordinates of the south - west corner: "0526". Since "e" is the fifth letter of the alphabet, this is Plot E26. The last digit "0" means that this plot was not moved by a quarter of a Mu, as some sites in Site A. The 6th digit can also indicate the subplot within the plot. "5", "6", "7", "8" indicate the northwest, northeast, southeast, and southwest quarter plot respectively.

FOR891_sp05e nitrogen: SP05e Effects of environmental conditions and biodiversity on litter decomposition and nutrient cycling in subtropical forests in China

Description:
In the first phase of BEF-China, Subproject 5 has quantified key pools and fluxes of the nitrogen cycle and in close cooperation with the Chinese counterparts also those of the carbon cycle. These measurements were done in the Comparative Study ...

FOR891_sp10e dead wood: SP10e Biodiversity signature in coarse woody detritus dynamics

Description:
Coarse woody debris (CWD) is an important component of forest ecosystems throughout the world. It represents a significant carbon and nutrient pool, promotes biodiversity of wooddwelling organisms, influences erosion and serves as a fuel for wil...

FOR891_sp09e foodweb: SP09e Aboveground multi-trophic plant-insect interactions in a Chinese subtropical forest

Description:
Plant biodiversity and site productivity shape the complexity of multi-trophic interactions, which, in turn, can influence plant performance and community structure. Analyses of multitrophic interactions are therefore crucial to understand the ro...

FOR891_sp07e soil microbes: SP07e Interplay of soil microbial and mycorrhiza fungal diversity with vegetation successional stage, plant diversity levels and phosphorus availability in subtropical forests of China

Description:
Microorganisms and mycorrhizal fungi rule resource cycling and plant adaptation to soils. Their community and diversity vary with plant diversity, soil properties and erosion, but were scarcely analysed in highly diverse subtropical forests with...

FOR891_sp01e production: SP01e Aboveground primary productivity in forest ecosystems as a function of species diversity and composition

Description:
Forests are the most productive vegetation type on Earth and responsible for more than 50 % of global net primary productivity (NPP). Accordingly, forest-mediated carbon (C) fluxes and C storage interact with the global climate. An important que...

FOR891_sp08e heterotroph: SP08e Diversity and functional effects of herbivores, predators and saproxylics in a phytodiverse subtropical forest ecosystem

Description:
Herbivores have been suggested as important drivers of tree diversity in phytodiverse forests. Our herbivory census with BEF China revealed a positive herbivory-plant diversity relationship in the CSPs. This indicates that resource-concentration...

FOR891_sp03e traits: SP03e Plant functional traits and functional diversity as predictors of ecosystem functioning

Description:
In the first phase of BEF-China, this subproject has focused on the Comparative Study Plots (CSPs) in the Gutianshan National Nature Reserve and demonstrated how functional diversity is maintained during secondary succession. A large range of le...

FOR891_sp06e soil: SP06e Mechanisms of soil erosion as a function of species richness and species composition in subtropical forests

Description:
During the first phase of BEF China (2008-2010), we have concentrated our research on the modification of the kinetic energy of precipitation by its pass through the tree canopy. All measurements were conducted in the CSPs under natural rainfall...

FOR891_sp13e microbe activity: SP13e Biomass and activity of the soil microbial community as a function of biodiversity and erosion potential in subtropical forests

Description:
As a huge dynamic reservoir of biodiversity and metabolic potentials, soil microorganisms shape nutrient cycling and ecosystem functions. Within the first stage of FOR 981, SP7 analyzed biomass of major groups of soil microorganisms by phospholi...
