Shortname:
FOR891_sp07e soil microbes
Name:
SP07e Interplay of soil microbial and mycorrhiza fungal diversity with vegetation successional stage, plant diversity levels and phosphorus availability in subtropical forests of China
Description:
Microorganisms and mycorrhizal fungi rule resource cycling and plant adaptation to soils.
Their community and diversity vary with plant diversity, soil properties and erosion, but were
scarcely analysed in highly diverse subtropical forests with mixed evergreen and deciduous
trees. In the 1st phase of the research unit, SP7 analyzed the biomass of main soil
microorganism groups and their diversity by molecular techniques on 12 comparative study
plots (CSPs) in a forest national park. While the 1st aspect will be continued in SP13, SP7 will
deepen and extend the molecular analyses. Already obtained sequence libraries will serve to
implement arrays or T-RFLP used to extend soil microbial diversity studies to all 27 CSPs.
Mycorrhizal status will be determined in a pot experiment coordinated by SP12, which
combines tree diversity and different inorganic and organic phosphorus sources. Following
the random extinction scenario realized in the reforestation Main Experiment high throughput
sequencing of rDNA and rRNA will serve to relate soil microbial diversity to community
assemblage and diversity levels of trees. In collaboration with SP4, mycorrhizal status of the
phytometer tree Machilus thurngii will be determined.

CSPs: Taxonomy and representative sequences of wood-inhabiting fungi in highly diverse subtropical forests, all CSPs
Abstract:
The deadwood mycobiome, also known as wood-inhabiting fungi (WIF), are among the key players in wood decomposition, having a large impact on nutrient cycling in forest soils. However, our knowledge of WIF richness and distribution patterns in diff...
