Abstract:
Ant sausage bait removal data from sausage baits laid out between spring and summer 2024.
Design:
The 64 VIP plots from site A and B of the BEF-China tree diversity experiment were selected. At each site, the 32 VIP plots follow a broken-stick design, in which all tree species are represented as monocultures and are randomly combined into mixtures of increasing diversity. In addition, sampling was conducted at 20 conifer monoculture plots (also split across sites A and B). A ca. 5 g chicken sausage slice was left in the field for 5 hours on a plastic tray attached to the ground using an insect pin, with four replicates per plot. Ants attending the sausage bait were counted 3 minutes before the end of the observation time. At the end of the observation time, voucher specimens were collected and directly transferred to 1 ml vials containing 90% ethanol. Voucher specimens were subsequently identified on (morpho)species level. See related dataset for the corresponding sausage bait ant community data. Ants still attending the sausage bait were then carefully removed, and the remaining sausage slice was dried in a drying oven until dry-weight equilibrium for five days at 80°C. The full dry weight was estimated using a calibration curve based on 30 sausage slices (see attached data), so an estimated removed dry weight could be obtained by subtracting the dry weight of the remaining sausage slice from the estimated full dry weight obtained from the calibration curve.
