Abstract:
These data were complied related to the question: Is there evidence for lateral N-transport from leaf litter to dead wood? Wood slices of different species (Pinus massonina, Schima superba, Quercus serrata) placed at different divers 15N labeled leaf litter mixture layers (of tree differenzt species: Schima superba, Quercus acutissima, Sapindus mukorossi). Two different decomposition periods were observed. Afterwards the decomposed wood slices were analysed via mass spectrometry regarding to their total N content and their 15N content. Additionally we observed the mass loss of wood samples during the decomposition process.
Design:
Mass loss of wood samples was calculated based on initial sample data for two different periods of decomposition (3 months and 6 months) on leaf litter layer.
Spatial extent:
Subtropical China, near Site A, Xingangshan, Jiangxi
Temporal extent:
Wood slices were placed at 16./17.04.2012 in the field and were harvested at 16.07.2012 (after 3 months) and 07.10.2012 (after 6 months). Dry weight was determined in right after harvest. Afterwards we calculated wood sample mass loss based on initial data.
Taxonomic extent:
Wood species: Pinus massoniana, Quercus serrata, Schima superba
Measurement cirumstances:
No information available
Data analysis:
Parameter of interest was mass loss of wood samples. Therefor we calculated the difference of initial dry weight and dry weight of sample after decomposition period. This value represents the mass loss of wood samples. Afterwards we converted these values into percentage data.

Initial dry weight of undecomposed wood samples based on dry weight and fresh weight information of 28 wood samples which were not exposed to decomposition. For each tree species and each tree individual we determined a dry weight/fresh weight ratio. Afterwards we multiply the measured fresh weight of decomposed wood samples by the determined ratio value. So we get the calculated initial dry weight of wood samples which were exposed to decomposition process.
