Abstract:
We measured the concentration of C and N in fine roots of 124 tree and shrub species in the CSPs. This work contributes three addtional traits to the plant trait database: Root N concentration, root C concentration and C/N ratio and will deliver data for calculating plant C and N pool sizes.
Design:
Root samples (1-11 replicates per species) were collected in October and November 2008 in the CSPs. Fine roots (diameter about 1mm - 3mm) were generally taken from the same individuals used by SP3 for stem, twig and leaf sampling. In cases where roots were not accessible, another indivual was choosen in the plot or close-by. Roots were dug out in the upper mineral soil horizon and were traced back to the the plant stem ensuring species specific root sampling. After washing and drying at 70°C, samples were analyzed for C and N using an Elemental Analyzer available at Peking University (Prof. Jin-Sheng He)
