Das LfULG ist nach § 43 des SächsNatSchG für die landesweite Dokumentation von Artvorkommen im Sinne naturschutzbedeutsamer Objekte zuständig (z. B. Datenbanken, Atlanten, Artenlisten, Rote Listen). Erfassungsdaten von Arten werden für verschiedenste Verwaltungs- und Fachaufgaben der Landes- und Kommunalverwaltungen benötigt (z. B. im Bereich Eingriffsregelung, spezielle artenschutzrechtliche Prüfung, Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung, Monitoring, Natura 2000 sowie für naturschutzfachliche Bewertungen und Planungen). Auch für die Facharbeit der Naturschutzvereinigungen, sowie weiterer Institutionen und Einrichtungen stellen Artbeobachtungsdaten eine der wichtigsten Grundlagen dar.
