Abstract:
The species richness for trees was calculated for each TSQ (for TSQ-level tree diversity), as well as the TSQ tree density (number of trees present)
Design:
The TSQs for Site B were created from, using the same methodology as for Site A in 2023. Therefore, a total of 102 TSQs were used for Site A. As the species of Site A were already known, two new species were pursued in order to produce a gradient of shrub species. These are Distylium buxifolium (DiBu) and Viburnum setigerum (ViSe). In Site B, a total of 133 TSQs were created, 89 containing shrubs within TSQs of different tree diversities, and 12 shrub only TSQs (controls)
Spatial extent:
BEF-China experiment, located near Xingangshang, Dexing City of Jianxi Province, Site B

Taxonomic extent:
Plants (Trees)
Measurement cirumstances:

Data analysis:
The species richness for trees was calculated for each TSQ (for TSQ-level tree diversity), as well as the TSQ tree density (number of trees present), in R Studio (Version 2024.09.0+375). The density refers the the number of trees present (alive).

Name:
PLOT
Definition:
Location within the site; Datagroup description: In the BEF-China Experiment, the sites were divided into 1mu plots, where trees and shrubs were planted in 2009 for Site A. In each 1-mu plot, 400 trees were planted with a distance of 1.29m between. Shrubs were planted in 4mu Superplots, with different shrub diversity levels, in the interspaces of the trees (0.91m to the nearest tree).

Dataset column

Name:
TSQ_SHRUB_ID
Definition:
Identification of the invidual shrubs, within the TSQS; Datagroup description: Within the plots, Tree Species Quadrats (TSQs) were created, which consist of a focal shrub in the centre and 4 surrounding trees, one on either corner of the quadrat. However, due to the high mortality rates of several species, many of the TSQs have less than 4 surrounding trees. The shrub coordinate, which is the same as the coordinate of the nearest tree in the SW direction (T1 of the TSQ), consists of four digits, representing the x and y coordinate (or row/column of the trees in the plot)
