Abstract:
The species richness for trees was calculated for each TSQ (for TSQ-level tree diversity), as well as the TSQ tree density (number of trees present)
Design:
The TSQs for Site A were created, measured and sampled in August 2023. Of the 140 TSQs, 90 contain shrubs with various levels of tree diversity (1-4), and 12 TSQs are shrub-only plots (i.e. no trees), which act as a control. The two shrub species selected in site A are Camellia Chemikiangoleosa (CaCh) and Distylium myricoides (DiMy). For each TSQ, the trees were identified to species level, and it was noted if the tree was missing or dead.

Data analysis:
The species richness for trees was calculated for each TSQ (for TSQ-level tree diversity), as well as the TSQ tree density (number of trees present), in R Studio (Version 2024.09.0+375). The density refers the the number of trees present (alive).

PLOT
Definition:
Location within the site; Datagroup description: In the BEF-China Experiment, the sites were divided into 1mu plots, where trees and shrubs were planted in 2009 for Site A. In each 1-mu plot, 400 trees were planted with a distance of 1.29m between. Shrubs were planted in 4mu Superplots, with different shrub diversity levels, in the interspaces of the trees (0.91m to the nearest tree).

Name:
TSQ_SHRUB_ID
Definition:
Identification of the invidual shrubs, within the TSQS; Datagroup description: Within the plots, Tree Species Quadrats (TSQs) were created, which consist of a focal shrub in the centre and 4 surrounding trees, one on either corner of the quadrat. However, due to the high mortality rates of several species, many of the TSQs have less than 4 surrounding trees. The shrub coordinate, which is the same as the coordinate of the nearest tree in the SW direction (T1 of the TSQ), consists of four digits, representing the x and y coordinate (or row/column of the trees in the plot)
