Abstract:
The DBH of the trees of each TSQ were measured; these were converted to basal areas and the basal areas of all the trees within a TSQ were added, for a total tree basal area measurement for each TSQ. This serves as a measure of competition for the focal shrubs
Design:
The DBH of the trees of each TSQ were measured using the protocol; Protocol for TSQ measurement in the BEF.docx
Spatial extent:
BEF-China experiment, located near Xingangshang, Dexing City of Jianxi Province - Site B
Temporal extent:
No information available
Taxonomic extent:
Trees
Measurement cirumstances:
No information available
Data analysis:
The DBH measurements of trees in each TSQ were used to calculate individual tree basal areas. Following the following formula: BA=πr^2, where pi=3.14 and r is the circumference, each circumference and diameter measurement was converted into a basal area in R Studio. The basal areas of all measurements for an individual tree were then summed to yield the total basal area for each tree within a TSQ. Subsequently, the basal areas of all trees in each TSQ were combined to determine the total basal area of trees per TSQ.

PLOT
Definition:
Location within the site; Datagroup description: In the BEF-China Experiment, the sites were divided into 1mu plots, where trees and shrubs were planted in 2009 for Site A. In each 1-mu plot, 400 trees were planted with a distance of 1.29m between. Shrubs were planted in 4mu Superplots, with different shrub diversity levels, in the interspaces of the trees (0.91m to the nearest tree).

TSQ_SHRUB_ID
Definition:
Identification of the invidual shrubs, within the TSQS; Datagroup description: Within the plots, Tree Species Quadrats (TSQs) were created, which consist of a focal shrub in the centre and 4 surrounding trees, one on either corner of the quadrat. However, due to the high mortality rates of several species, many of the TSQs have less than 4 surrounding trees. The shrub coordinate, which is the same as the coordinate of the nearest tree in the SW direction (T1 of the TSQ), consists of four digits, representing the x and y coordinate (or row/column of the trees in the plot)

TSQ_TREE
Definition:
Tree number based on the position of the tree in the TSQ; Datagroup description: The Tree Species Quadrats (TSQs) which were created, consist of a focal shrub in the centre and 4 surrounding trees, one on either corner of the quadrat. Tree 1 is defined as the tree in the SW corner (and has the same coordinate as the focal shrub), and then trees 2-4 go in a clockwise direction from there (NW, NE, SE). However, due to the high mortality rates of several species, many of the TSQs have less than 4 surrounding trees
