Abstract:
Several field studies have shown the positive effect of diversity on primary productivity in grasslands. However, little is known about forest ecosystems, the most productive vegetation type on Earth and responsible for more than 50 % of global net primary productivity (NPP). In this project, we will investigate the relationship between tree diversity (species richness, identity, composition, and functional diversity) and the aboveground biomass production during the initial development of forest communities in the Main Experiment. This dataset contains 4-year growth data of trees in the core area in all plots of the Main Experiment (excluding genetic plots).
Data was collected by SP1 PhD students, M. Baruffol, N. Castro and Y. Huang, in collaboration with SP2. Data has been cleaned, matched and corrected/fixed by N. Castro.
Design:
We measured the central 4x4 tree individuals of all plots in late summer/early autumn of 2009-2013. Position, alive/dead, species, basal diameter, diameter at breast height, and height were recorded. Trees were marked with small white plastic labels at the beginning of the experiment and its growth was monitor during the following years.
Spatial extent:
The Main Experiment consists of two sites (A & B) located near to the village Xingangshan in Dexing County, Jiangxi province. Each site covers 256 1-mu plots (after excluding all plots from the F and G scenarios and all plots with 0- tree species richness). Each plot comprises 400 trees (planted as 20x20 grid).
Temporal extent:
A census was conducted every year in late summer/early autumn of 2009-2013.
Taxonomic extent:
The central 4x4 tree individuals of all plots in site A and B (after excluding all plots from the F and G scenarios and all plots with 0- tree species richness).
Measurement cirumstances:
Note that only in 2012 the metal labels were attached to the trees. Before that year, there were no permanent labels and some labels (from SP1/SP2) fell off. This led to some mistakes and some tree species don't match among years. In addition, replanting data was only recorded by Z1 in 2012 (during replanting campaings). Tree age has been determined using seedling data from Chen Lin and Xuefei, replanting data 2012 by Z1, inventory data (SP1 and SP2) and leaf demography data (SP1).
Data analysis:
The data will be used to estimate the stand basal area and biomass in order to test the effects of diversity on primary production.
