Abstract:

This dataset provides a distance matrix wich gives the distances between the CSPs in the Gutianshan National Nature reserve (29º8'18" – 29º17'29" N, 118º2'14" – 118º11'12" E, Zhejiang Province Southeast China). The distances are based on the spatial information available from the dataset "Comparative study plot (CSP) information to be shared with all BEF-China scientists" (http://china.befdata.biow.uni-leipzig.de/datasets/205). Be aware that for some CSPs (CSP4, CSP12) the accuracy of the GPS information may not be very high due to the high in-site spatial heterogeneity and dense canopy-cover. The distances were calculated in km using the function rdist.earth() in R (library: fields). For the calculation of distances, the earth's radius was set to mean earth's radius (6371km, default for function= 6378.4km at equator) to correct for the fact that the earth is not a perfect sphere. Only the lower triangle of the matrix is given here, as the upper triangle contains redundant information.

Design:

According the the metadata given in the dataset "Comparative study plot (CSP) information to be shared with all BEF-China scientists" (http://china.befdata.biow.uni-leipzig.de/datasets/205) 27 CSPs were established between May and July 2008. Species recording was performed between May and October 2008 with several visits per plot. Each CSP has a size of 30 m by 30 m. The corners of every CSP were permanently marked with magnets. Spatial information was collected using geko 201. It is unclear wheter every GPS information for each CSP comes from the south-west corner of the CSP. However, for the purpose of calculationg rough distances between the CSps the data can be judged to be of sufficient accuracy.

Be aware that for some CSPs (CSP4, CSP12) the accuracy of the GPS information may not be very high due to the high in-site spatial heterogeneity and dense canopy-cover. It is unclear wheter every GPS information for each CSP comes from the south-west corner of the CSP. However, for the purpose of calculationg rough distances between the CSps the data can be judged to be of sufficient accuracy.

Data analysis:

This matrix can be used as additional information and covariate for spatial analyses on the CSPs. If a mean distance between all CSPs is required: 3.402 km (this can be directly extracted from the dataset in R using the following function (available in the library: gdata): mean(lowerTriangle((<CSPdistance Information Data>[,2:28],diag=F)) where <CSPdistance Informatio Data> is the R object to which the dataset was imported.)
