Abstract:
Leaf level herbivory of the four central individuals of the pilot experiment. The idea is to see if there are plant diversity effects on the level of damage experienced by the plants and if this effect is different among herbivors feeding guilds
Design:
The herbivory has been recorded according to the BACCARA protocol of 2010. It means that, whenever available, 12 leaves per sappling have been assessed (twenty in 2009) and the different feeding guilds have been assessed. Whenever possible, 6 leaves where assessed in the upper canopy part and 6 leaves in the lowest canopy part, 3 leaves at the terminal part of the branch and 3 leaves at the basal part of the branch ("young_old" variable). The four central individuals were measured, when one one species present in the plot was not among the four central individuals, an additional non central individual was measured. If the four central individuals were already harvested, one individual per species among the remaining individuals was measured General rules : The herbivore damages have six categories (0%; 1-5%; 6-10%; 11-25%; 26-50%; 51-75% and >75%). The "total damage" category is the herbivores overall damage and does not necessarily match with the sum of the separate damages. Additionally from the spring measurment, an "unknown" category when it was not possible to surely assess the feeding guild. In the excel cells, the herbivory given is the proportion of the leaf damaged. The number represents the middle of the damage category (ex, 6-25% makes a prop of 0.15)
Spatial extent:
Pilot experiment 29°06'N 117°55'E
Temporal extent:
fall 2009, time needed to record the herbivory in all the plots available at this time of Pool X, Pool Y and of Pool Z
Taxonomic extent:
all the species of pool X, of pool Y and of Pool Z
Measurement cirumstances:
Note that there are some difference with the protocol of 2009. Because some blocks were at that time processed by other groups, not all plots were sampled; block 4 could not be sampled and pool z not could not be sampled in block 3.
Data analysis:
Amount of herbivory depending on plant diversity, differential herbivore feeding guild response
