Abstract:
This data belongs to Dr. Forest's task T2.1a on objective thermal comfort. It includes microclimatic measures of eight sites (Bialowieza, BIOTREE, FORBIO Hechtel-Eksel + Gedinne + Zedelgem, Hainich, ORPHEE and TREEWEB) during the period between August/September 2020 and October/November 2021. This results in 131 forest plots (only 1- and 3-species) and 16 control plots (2 per site), which were located on nearby open fields. Four variables were measured: air temperature, 'grey' globe temperature, wind speed and air humidity. Wind speed was only measured on one of both controls and in one of the 3-species plots.
Important: as the dataset is too large (about 3.9 million datapoints), it is uploaded separately as an RDA file. This file is an intermediary file: the quite numerous erroneous values were filtered out and replaced by 'NA'. Further processing includes a simple linear interpolation of missing values created due to the different logging frequencies (every 30 min for grey globe T and wind speed, and every 60 minutes for air T and humidity), meaning one out of two cells of the latter two variables were filled with the mean of the two surrounding values. The situation is different for the summer of 2021, where all loggers equally were programmed to log every 15 minutes. No interpolation was thus done for those observations (Frequency = "F15" in the datafile).Additionally, wind measures first had to be converted from rotation count data to wind speed based on regression coeficients formulated based on a calibration with a more precise anemometer. The two wind measures per time unit and per site (control & 3-species plot) were then copied to all control and forest plots, respectively. Other available data modifications, but not included in this file, include the calculation of the mean radiant temperature and, using this new variable, the physiologically equivalent temperature (PET), which is the final indicator of human thermal comfort used for this study. As the last two variables are very much human-centered, they were not included but can be asked after. The climate data will be related to multiple forest biodiversity and structure variables that were measured in the field during the summer of 2020.
Design:
The most central point of a plot for 1-species plots. The most central point where the three species are present for 3-species plots. See fieldwork protocol for more details!
Spatial extent:
8 sites in four countries (see abstract)
Temporal extent:
Different logging frequencies were used: every 30 min for grey globe T and wind speed, and every 60 minutes for air T and humidity. The resulting missing data (i.e. air T and humidity at every HH:30:00) were linearly interpolated using the value just before and just after that point in time. The situation is different for the summer of 2021, where all loggers were equally programmed to log every 15 minutes.
