Dr.Forest_T3.1
Name:
Dr.Forest_Task 3-1: Risk of urtication by forest caterpillars
Description:
We expose oak phytometers, i.e. young potted trees to control for origin and size, in pure vs. mixed oak plots of Experiments and Exploratories. Oak processionary sentinel larvae will be exposed on phytometers, until the third instar (to avoid urtication of experimenters). We will quantify leaf damage and leaf defence traits on phytometers, and caterpillar growth and survival. Dummy caterpillars (plasticine) will be used to quantify bird predation (pecking counts). Oak processionary larvae are not very mobile; they will be easily removed at the end of the experiment. Bird counts will be made to estimate diversity of insectivorous birds and to search for correlations with diversity of sounds (WP1).
