Abstract:
Particulate matter (PM) was analysed for four Dr.FOREST VIPs in Summer 2021. Sampling was carried out according to the Sampling Protocol of Task4 Dr.Forest (take a look for in-depth information). Based on "Dr_Forest_befdata_workbook_PM_2021" a particle size analysis was carried out prior to the gravimetrical particulate matter fractionation and mass analysis. For this task we used a Shimadzu SALD-2300 particle size analyser utilizing laser diffraction to analyse the particle size distribution the particulate matter deposition leaf sample solutions. We conducted a number-based and volume-based analysis of the same PM solution samples. We used the volume-based approach to capture the full distribution spectrum of the respective sample. As a downside of this method, a few big and voluminous particles can cover and mask smaller particles on the leeward side of the laser beam. For that reason, we used a second methodological approach, the number-based analysis to measure very small particles
≤ 1 μm. The instrument gathers and stores all necessary information in a single sample run, making it possible to switch between those four method-approaches retrospectively. This file contains the volume based analysis.
