Abstract:
Soil samples for fine-root analyses were taken during the 2017 SoilForEUROPE field sampling campaign with the aim to assess whether tree species mixing influences fine-root biomass and length. This data frame contains the sampling point data, i.e. the distances between sampling points and individual (triplet) trees, as well as the tree's diameters.

For each plot, five subplots ("tree triplets") were selected for soil sampling. These triplets consistet of three tree individuals, either of the same species (in mono-specific plots) or of three different species (in the mixed plots). See Wambsganss et al. 2021, Journal of Ecology for detailed description of field sampling and laboratory analyses. The proportion of conifer trees (% basal area) was calculated based on the tree data taken by the 2018 Romanian Sampling Campaign across all plots.
