Abstract:
A 2-cycle drying and rewetting experiment was conducted with the soil from the 2017 SoilForEUROPE campaign with the aim to see whether tree species mixing influenced drought effects on soil microbial functioning. Experiment details can be found in Gillespie et al. 2020 Communications Biology. This dataframe contains the resistance and recovery index values calculated for: the beginning, the first drying-rewetting cycle, the second drying-rewetting cycle, and for both drying-rewetting cycles (entire experiment). There are two other datasets associated with this experiment: SFE_Microbial_activity_Drought_data1 and SFE_Microbial_activity_Drought_data2
Design:
Experiment details can be found in Gillespie et al. 2020 Communications Biology
Spatial extent:
Finland, Romania, Poland, Italy
Temporal extent:
For each plot, 3-4 soil cores (2 cm diameter, 0-10 cm depth) were been taken for each of the five subplots after litter removal. See Gillespie et al. 2020 Communications Biology for detailed description of field sampling and experimental design.

Dataset column

Name:
Resistance_CO2
Definition:
Resistance was calculated by dividing the values of CO2 and N2O flux rates measured in the DRW treatment by those measured in the control treatment at the end of each drought period. Since there were no defined control and DRW treatment microcosm replicate pairs, we divided the results of each individual DRW microcosm replicate by the average of the three control treatment results.
